Triticale harvest

Triticale harvest from a 4×4 square foot bed. Harvesting – In small space gardens, you can do this by hand. Gather a bouquet of stalks together and cut them off with pruning shears, leaving at least a foot on stalk attached. The photo above shows our harvest.

When should triticale be cut?

Triticale will retain feed value and palatability better at later stages of maturity and naturally is later in development. Cutting by early milk stage might happen in early to mid-June. Other annual grasses to fit various niches include oats and pearl millet.

Does triticale make good hay?

Extremely high forage quality—unmatched fiber digestibility with timely harvest. Properly planted and fertilized, consistently yields 2.5 to 4 tons dry matter/acre. Fall-planted triticale produces high quality forage without tying up valuable land for 4-5 years, as alfalfa does.

Can you feed straight triticale to cows?

When triticale is harvested at the dough stage of maturity (9.0 – 15.0% protein), it is a good forage source for dry cows and replacement heifers. However, triticale may be a good forage for lactating cows if this is harvested at boot stage (more than 15.0% protein).

Can humans eat triticale?

Triticale is consumed by humans primarily in the form of bread, flour, and cereals, though most of the triticale crop is used for livestock feed.

Will triticale reseed itself?

Triticale does not tend to reseed itself and become a “weed.”

Can triticale be baled dry?

It has proven to have higher protein content than both of its parents and can be fed out in the field as a green forage crop, chopped and used as silage or baled and fed dry; it can even be plowed under for a good manure crop.

Does triticale fix nitrogen?

Triticale, there- fore, may be a useful crop for trapping excess nitrogen that would normally be lost through leaching, while peas can be used to actually increase the total amount of nitro- gen in a soil.

What is the average yield of triticale?

Triticale silage yield The dry silage yield of triticale averaged 14,324 kg/ha (minimum 12,812 kg/ha; maximum 16,137 kg/ha. This converts to 12,758 lbs/ac (min. 11,411 lbs/ac to max. 14,373 lbs/ac).

How long does it take triticale to mature?

Triticale can produce good dry matter yields within 60 to 80 days after planting. When planted the first two weeks of August and with adequate rainfall, spring triticale can produce from 2,500 to 5,000 pounds per acre of dry matter by mid-October.

Will triticale survive winter?

The winter hardiness of winter triticale is sufficiently good that it can be grown throughout Nebraska wherever winter wheat can be grown. Winter triticale is more winter hardy than winter barley, hence is a consistent component of a cover crop than winter barley.

Is triticale good for deer?

Cereal grains for the deer manager mean wheat, oats, rye and triticale. Both types of plants (cereals and brassicas) provide strong nutritional value and a taste that deer relish.

What is the best grain to finish cattle?

Corn has the highest energy value and is likely the most economical grain in corn-producing localities. Corn, oats, and barley are the primary grains fed to cattle. Oats, which has a lower energy value due to its high fiber content, is considered the "safest" grain in regards to potential digestive disturbances.

What is the best grain to fatten cattle?

What is the best feed for fattening cattle? Barley is the best grain for lot feeding cattle, but wheat, triticale, sorghum, maize, and oats can be used. Oats is not an ideal grain on its own for cattle fattening but can be used with any of the other grains. Hay or silage could be used as the roughage source.

How late can you seed triticale?

Seeding date Because spring triticale is a late maturing crop, seeding for grain production should be completed by the second week of May in all parts of the western prairies and British Columbia. If conditions allow, seed as early as May 15 for maximum yield.

What is triticale good for?

Triticale is a hybrid cross of wheat and rye. Forage production is higher than wheat and nutritive value is greater than rye. It produces a large, broad leaf that is grazed well by livestock. Triticale is a versatile crop that can be used for grazing, hay, and silage.

What is triticale mainly used for?

Triticale is a multi-purpose crop that can be grazed during vegetative stages of development and subsequently harvested for grain. It can also be cut for silage. When harvested for grain, triticale offers an alternate animal feed source and also has a growing potential in the human food market.

Is triticale better than wheat?

There are many benefits to growing triticale. It is more durable than wheat when grazed; which means it will be healthier and stand up to weeds, diseases and cold weather better than wheat. On the High Plains, it is virtually disease free. Triticale will yield higher tonnage than wheat when taken for silage.

Is triticale good for the soil?

Triticale is among the best overwintering species that help reduce soil erosion and capture residual nitrogen, which in turn increases annual forage yield and quality (Ketterings et al., 2015).

How many pounds of triticale do you plant per acre?

Planting specifications Seeding rate: Seed triticale for cover at 40-60 lbs per-acre; 80-100 lbs per acre for early spring forage. Seeding depth: Drill 1-2” deep or broadcast and lightly till-in.
